Homebrew - Victory and Chaos IPA
Am I good at this yet? Simply put, no. I am still learning and forever will continue to do so.
I'm trying to get back into the home brewing game though, it has been a few months since I last brewed a beer.
Currently setting out to brew an IPA. The recipe being used comes from John Palmer's How To Brew book. The IPA is called Victory and Chaos. Seems like a fairly easy beer to brew, so it should be a good recipe to ease me back into all the homebrewing mechanics.
First part of getting this process started, is getting the ingredients for the brew. This process in and of itself required some review. Basically figuring out the correct amount of malt extract to get adjusting for differences in ppg's and also the correct amount of hops to get adjusting for differences in AAU's.
In the process of reviewing this, I did already learn about what BG (boil gravity) is and how to go about calculating the expected IBU of the beer based on a hopping schedule.
Below is both what ingredients I will be using and what I calculated to be the theoretical (maximum yield - 100% efficiency) results of the brew:
Ingredient | Quantity/Amount |
---|---|
Pale Ale Dry Malt Extract - 1.043 ppg | 9 lbs |
Briess Crystal 20L - Milled (steeped) | 0.5 lb |
Nugget Hop Pellets - 12.5% | 1 oz |
UK Goldings Hop Pellets - ~5% | 3 oz |
WLP013 London Ale Yeast - ~71% att. | 1 packet |
Beer Property | Theoretical Value |
---|---|
BG | 1.067 |
OG | 1.079 |
FG | 1.023 |
ABV | 7.35% |
IBU | 55 |
Hopefully it all comes together relatively close to these expected results. I'll have to report back once the brew is started, and then again when it is finished.
